Lusira Syrah DOC

Op een perceel van 4 hectare staan de syrah-stokken van Cristo di Campobello diep geworteld in een kalkrijke krijtbodem. Gedurende de hele maand september worden de druiven in fases met de hand geplukt. Het grootste deel van de druiven wordt gebruikt voor de productie van de ‘CDC’ rosso en ‘Adènzia’ rosso. Enkel de meest rijpe en gezonde druiven zijn bestemd voor de circa 11.000 flessen ‘Lusirà’ die jaarlijks op de markt komen. Deze 2015 verliet de kelders in april 2019. In de kelders worden de druiven eerst ontrist en daarna zacht gekneusd. De most wordt meerdere malen geheveld om een optimale extractie te verkrijgen. De schilweking duurt circa 18 dagen en geschiedt bij gecontroleerde temperaturen. Na de vergisting blijft de ‘Lusirà’ 14 maanden rijpen in Frans eiken barriques, waarvan het eiken uit de wouden van Nevers, Tronçais en Allier komt. De barriques hebben een inhoud van 225 liter en één derde bestaat uit nieuw eiken. Na de rijping op eiken, verblijft de wijn nog minstens 12 maanden op fles.

Het resultaat is een donker robijnrode wijn met aroma’s van zwarte bramenjam, kersenlikeur, zoethout, drop en specerijen als zwarte peper, alsmede hints van gedroogde tabaksbladeren en gerookte bacon. De ‘Lusirà’ is robuust en full-bodied met dik sap. De rijpe, geconcentreerde smaken worden vergezeld door stevige, doch zachte tannine en zetten zich ver door tot in de zeer lange, sappige afdronk.

Coffee, cocoa and Oriental wood nuances complement dark berry and spices on the intense nose. Young and closed down, this brooding wine hints at dense, rich and very pure flavors of underbrush and blackberry. Closes long and clean, with a youthfully chewy and multilayered quality. One of the best young Syrahs from Sicily I remember tasting at a similar stage of development.

The 2013 Sicilia Syrah Lusirà opens to a dark color and concentration with loads of bold fruit intensity that rises immediately from the glass. The bouquet presents all that dark, luscious fruit backed by aromas of cured meat, juniper berry and distinct notes of dried tobacco. The results are well amalgamated and they show evident care and precision. Fans of Syrah, from California to Australia, should try this all-Sicilian expression of the grape. This is the best set of wines I have yet to taste from Carmelo Bonetta and his family. I have had the privilege of tasting the wines of Baglio del Cristo di Campobello since the very beginning.
